Teaching Methods: Warming Up to Biodiversity

To convey the importance of biodiversity, presenting facts is often insufficient. This document provides inspiration for teaching methods that engage hands, heart and mind. Drawing on over twenty examples, methods are categorised as follows: 1) fostering a sense of wonder for nature (marveling at nature), 2) putting yourself in nature’s shoes (emphathising with nature), 3) standing strong together (experiencing ecosystem interdependence). These methods can be adjusted to suit all educational levels.

The University of Eastern Finland has developed an online course titled “Nature-Based Solutions”, which provides students with a solid introduction to NBS through numerous real-life examples from Nordic environments.
