Learn in Nature Lab

ᴇNᴀBʟS’ German Living Lab (LL), coordinated by the Center for Biodiversity and Integrative Taxonomy (KomBioTa), explores the effectiveness of various educational methods—case studies, outdoor learning, expert lectures, and debate sessions—in enhancing students’ understanding of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS). These activities also provide teachers with valuable insights into the effectiveness of these approaches for teaching NBS concepts.

Education is at the core of the German LL, engaging students, teachers, and external stakeholders in collaborative learning experiences. Taking place mainly at the premises of the University of Hohenheim, the LL’s activities include:

Student-led case studies exploring NBS applications;
Excursions to real-world sites demonstrating NBS;
Guest lectures featuring experts sharing practical insights;
Debate sessions where stakeholders exchange knowledge and experiences on NBS.

Contribution to ᴇNᴀBʟS and expected impact

During the first year of ᴇNᴀBʟS, interviews conducted by our project partners revealed a clear need to adapt and improve teaching methods to effectively integrate NBS into higher education curricula. The overall goal of the German LL is driving meaningful change — or at least making a significant impact — on current teaching and learning practices, which often lack a connection to nature and a real-world approach in delivering NBS education.
