Written by: Nandni Shah (ᴇNᴀBʟS, UHOH) and Johanna Schaal (ECHO, UHOH)

On 3 June 2025, ᴇNᴀBʟS and ECHO co-hosted an Open Soil Workshop at the University of Hohenheim as part of the Learn-in-Nature Lab’s NBS101 series. The event engaged a diverse group including students, families, and seniors in exploring soil as a living, vital ecosystem.

Through interactive activities such as Soil Bingo, DIY (Do-It-Yourself) soil texture testing, and microscopic observation of soil fauna, participants gained hands-on insights into soil health, biodiversity, and sustainability. The workshop also introduced citizen science methods to foster public involvement in soil monitoring and care. This collaboration between two EU-supported initiatives demonstrated the power of sensory, experience-based learning to promote awareness of Nature-Based Solutions and the importance of healthy soils in everyday life.
