The Myth
Biodiversity loss is too large a global problem for teachers or local communities to influence, suggesting that biodiversity decline is driven solely by large-scale processes and that local action is consequently unable to produce meaningful change.
The Reality
This misconception stems from the belief that biodiversity decline is driven only by large-scale global processes – industrial land use, climate change, economic systems – and that small actors such as teachers, schools, or local communities have little power to create meaningful change. While biodiversity loss indeed operates at a global scale, scientific evidence consistently shows that its drivers – and solutions – are rooted in local decisions, behaviours, and ecological actions.
The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services1 emphasises that biodiversity loss results from “a cumulative effect of millions of local decisions worldwide,” highlighting that meaningful change requires action at every level of society. Local interventions, even when small in scale, contribute directly to ecosystem resilience, species protection, and public awareness.

Educational systems play a particularly important role. Chawla2 demonstrated that meaningful early-life experiences in nature – often facilitated by teachers – are among the strongest predictors of lifelong environmental engagement. Schools shape ecological literacy, environmental responsibility, and pro-conservation behaviour. In this way, teachers influence how future generations understand and act upon biodiversity challenges.
Local action also contributes directly to scientific knowledge. Fraisl et al.3 found that citizen-science data, much of it collected by students and community groups, contributes measurably to the monitoring of several UN Sustainable Development Goals, including biodiversity-related SDGs 14 and 15. These data sets are frequently incorporated into national and global biodiversity assessments, demonstrating that community participation strengthens scientific capacity.
Higher education institutions contribute as well. Schlecht et al.4 showed that biodiversity monitoring on university campuses generated species occurrence records that informed regional conservation planning. The authors concluded that “local biodiversity assessments create actionable knowledge at broader landscape levels,” reinforcing the importance of local initiatives in global conservation systems.
Local ecological interventions – such as planting pollinator gardens, restoring wetlands, maintaining semi-natural meadows, and removing invasive species – have repeatedly been shown to increase species richness and improve ecological function5. Although modest individually, these actions cumulatively produce significant landscape-scale benefits.
The Convention on Biological Diversity6 explicitly recognises the role of local communities and educational institutions in implementing global conservation frameworks. Their involvement is essential for promoting behavioural change, strengthening ecological stewardship, and sustaining biodiversity-friendly cultural norms.
In summary, biodiversity loss is not solely a global-scale problem beyond the reach of teachers or local communities. Research from international assessments, ecological studies, and education science demonstrates that local actors play an indispensable role in biodiversity protection. Their influence extends through education, stewardship, data collection, and on-the-ground ecological enhancement. Local action is therefore not peripheral – it is a foundational component of global biodiversity recovery.
