Restoring Natural Meadows at VMU Arboretum: A Living Lab Initiative for Nature-Based Solutions
On 27 June 2025, the Arboretum of the Vytautas Magnus University Agriculture Academy became a vibrant space for biodiversity and practical learning, as a natural meadow restoration activity took place in the framework of the ᴇNᴀBʟS project (Education and Nature-Based Solutions: enable society to bend the curve for biodiversity).
The aim of the initiative was to support biodiversity and demonstrate the integration of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) into education and environmental stewardship. Arboretum staff prepared an experimental plot for meadow restoration: the existing vegetation was mown, biomass removed, and the soil scarified to improve seed contact. A local expert developed a diverse seed mix of native grasses and herbs, tailored to site conditions and chosen for their ecological value. The seeds were sown across selected areas of the Arboretum.
The activity was carried out by ᴇNᴀBʟS’ Lithuanian Living Lab, coordinated by the VMU team, together with students from the Faculty of Forest Sciences and Ecology. It provided a hands-on opportunity to learn about native plant species, their role in ecosystem stability, and the practical application of NBS in modern agriculture. The restored meadows will serve as a demonstration site, supporting future study activities, educational programs, collaboration with communities, and international exchanges.
This initiative reflects the core mission of ᴇNᴀBʟS – to empower education in addressing biodiversity loss through local action, experiential learning, and strong links between science and society.
