On 17th April 2025, a key expert consultation took place at the Arboretum of the Vytautas Magnus University Agriculture Academy, focusing on the restoration of natural meadows as a Nature-Based Solution (NBS) to strengthen green infrastructure. This initiative is one of the cornerstone actions within ᴇNᴀBʟS’ Lithuanian Living Lab network and reflects ongoing efforts to enhance biodiversity, ecological resilience, and experiential learning on campus and in the wider community.
The consultation brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including:
Participants assessed the ecological potential and feasibility of restoring native meadow habitats within the Arboretum. Following an on-site evaluation, a suitable area was selected based on ecological criteria such as soil conditions, sun exposure, and existing vegetation.
The team collaboratively outlined a phased action plan for the coming months. Initial steps will include site preparation, and the introduction of native meadow plant species. Educational and community engagement activities will be integrated into the process to raise awareness of the role that meadows play in biodiversity conservation, pollinator support, and climate adaptation.
This initiative exemplifies the mission of the Lithuanian Living Lab – led by VMU – to connect science, land stewardship, and public participation in co-developing sustainable, Nature-Based Solutions. The restored meadow will serve not only as a biodiversity hotspot but also as a living classroom for students, researchers, and the local community.
