Action Starts Here and Now: VMU Students Explore the Causes of Climate Change and Potential Solutions
The climate crisis is no longer a distant threat – every day counts. Scientists agree that we have only a few years to make fundamental changes if we want to avoid serious consequences for future generations. On 30 April 2025, students from the Vytautas Magnus University Agriculture Academy gathered to better understand the scope of this crisis and explore potential solutions.
Interactive Climate Fresk workshops took place at the Faculty of Forest Sciences and Ecology, initiated by the Department of Environmental Sciences and Ecology. This activity was part of ᴇNᴀBʟS’ Lithuanian Living Lab, aiming to strengthen community engagement in climate change mitigation and sustainability.
Students from two-degree programmes participated in the workshop: second-year students of the Bachelor’s in Applied Ecology and first-year students of the Master’s in Ecology and Climate Change (English-taught programme).
The workshop was facilitated by Evelina Lekešiūtė, an active climate educator, certified Climate Fresk facilitator, and project manager at the NGO “Active Youth Association”. A graduate of Kaunas University of Technology, Evelina has experience in project management and non-formal education. In 2024, she represented Lithuania as the country’s sole delegate at the international COP29 Youth Conference in Azerbaijan.
During the workshop, students engaged in exploring the causes and consequences of climate change through a game-based, collaborative learning method. Working in teams, they uncovered interlinked global processes, discussed challenges and opportunities, and reflected on their individual and collective roles in addressing the climate crisis. The experience inspired not only intellectual engagement but also a sense of responsibility to act.
This was not just another lecture or academic exercise. It was a starting point for change – where knowledge transforms into motivation and understanding leads to meaningful action. Students walked away with deeper insights into climate change and a clearer sense of what can be done both individually and collectively.
