Lively learning: exploring nature-inclusive education
In practice, Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) are not just technical solutions but nature-based or nature-inclusive approaches to societal issues. They require a more nature-based mindset fostering new relationships with nature, reimagining governance and including active participation of communities. ᴇNᴀBʟS’ Dutch Living Lab (LL), coordinated by the Wageningen University (WUR), aims to address this challenge by developing nature-inclusive educational approaches that can be applied in any curriculum.
It focuses on the broader concept of Nature-Based Thinking (NBT), which is the underlying approach of NBS to societal issues. Nature-inclusive education is also an NBS in itself; it has the potential to revitalise education and support sustainability goals of schools. Through a community of practice involving students, teachers and other university members, such approaches are co-created and tested in real-life course settings. Students play a key role in the process of research, evaluation and organisation of the LL, contributing through coursework, theses and internships.

The Dutch LL is hosted at the Wageningen University and consists of four main activities:
While university teachers and students are its primary stakeholders, WUR strives to broaden the impact of the LL by collaborating with Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, a network of pre-university high schools, and a local primary school programme. This approach seeks to adapt and translate the educational approaches to other levels of education.

Contribution to ᴇNᴀBʟS and expected impact

The Dutch LL aims to create tested educational approaches for NBT across disciplines. Its overall goal is the adoption of nature-inclusive education at the Wageningen University and its partner institutions, as well as the wider recognition and understanding of NBT in relation to NBS.
